Waka Ora Health Shuttles East Coast

Accessing healthcare can be challenging for many living up the Coast, where long distances and limited transport options make essential appointments hard to reach. This fund supports the Hato Hone St John Waka Ora Health Shuttles on the East Coast, helping keep this vital lifeline running well into the future.

The shuttle service provides koha-based transport for people attending medical or wellbeing appointments, picking them up from home and returning them afterwards. Operated by trained volunteers, it removes transport barriers for older adults, those without a vehicle, or anyone unable to get to appointments safely or independently.

Two shuttles, based in Te Araroa and Tikitiki, serve the region. Both are grounded in strong community support and manaakitanga – caring for people – ensuring Coast whānau can stay connected to the care they need, when they need it.
