Comet Swimming Club

For more than 60 years, Comet Swimming Club has been a place where generations of locals have learned water confidence, built lifelong skills, and discovered the joy of swimming.

The Comet Swimming Club was founded in 1958 by the late Mrs Beth Meade QSM, and has been at the heart of aquatic sport and learn-to-swim development in Gisborne ever since.

Across decades, Comet has nurtured young swimmers, supported coaches, and partnered with the community. Milestones include the introduction of a learn-to-swim programme in the 1990s, the club’s early involvement with the Olympic Pool Complex in 1974, and the launch of a bold strategic plan in 2025 focused on growth, safety and confidence in the water.

In a region framed by coastline and rivers, being comfortable in the water is a key life skill. By strengthening the club’s reach and programming, Comet help tamariki and rangatahi gain vital aquatic skills.

Comet offers pathway opportunities for swimmers of all ages, from learn-to-swim to competitive squads and everything in-between, and fosters leadership, teamwork and perseverance through sport.

The club draws families, supporters and volunteers from across Tairāwhiti, strengthening their regional identity and cohesion.
