A Boost for Tairāwhiti’s Fijian Community

The Pasifika sevens rugby team is delighted with the grant from Sunrise to help purchase new sporting equipment.

Thanks to support from Sunrise, the Tairāwhiti Fijian Community can now grow its sport and wellbeing initiatives for people of all ages throughout Tairāwhiti.

For years, their Pasifika sevens rugby team and wider programmes have operated with limited resources, often relying on borrowed or makeshift equipment. This has created barriers to regular training, community events, and participation.

With Sunrise’s grant, they can now purchase essential equipment for rugby, netball, volleyball, and community-wide sports days. This investment will enable consistent training, reduce financial pressure, and open up more opportunities for people to develop their skills and stay active.

Beyond the practical benefits, access to proper gear helps strengthen cultural pride and create positive pathways for people to come together, participate, and enjoy sport. It also supports the Fijian community’s vision of building stronger Pasifika connections across Tairāwhiti.

“This initiative is a wonderful example of how a small boost at the right time can make a lasting difference. By improving access to sport, we’re helping people get involved, enjoy being part of a team, and feel supported by their community, says Glenda Stokes, Sunrise CEO.
