Since 2012, the Tairāwhiti Multicultural Council (TMC) has been a driving force for unity in our region, creating spaces where every culture is valued and every person feels they belong.
Well-loved events such as the Colour Run for Diversity and Inclusion, Festival of Lights, and International Food Festival have become vibrant celebrations of connection, culture, and community pride. But beyond the festivities, TMC’s work runs deeper, championing equity, respect, and the right for everyone to be accepted for who they are.
Through initiatives like the Opportunities Without Discrimination movement (#owdsocks), TMC has inspired people to embrace their identity with confidence and to stand up for inclusion in everyday life. As the region’s cultural landscape has grown richer, TMC’s role has evolved, too. The organisation now focuses on supporting new and emerging multicultural and ethnic-led groups to establish themselves and thrive independently, ensuring all communities have a voice.
TMC has taken an inspiring step toward long-term sustainability with the creation of the Tairāwhiti Multicultural Council OWDSocks Endowment Fund.
The fund will provide ongoing support for multicultural initiatives and organisations throughout the region, ensuring the spirit of unity continues to grow for generations to come.
“This fund reflects the heart of what Sunrise is about: helping local generosity create lasting impact,” says Sunrise CEO Glenda Stokes. “Their commitment to inclusion enriches our entire community, and we’re proud to support a fund that will help this important work continue forever.”
TMC president and co-founder Arish Naresh adds, “Our goal is timeless, to nurture a region where every culture is valued, every voice is heard, and every community has the resources to flourish. This fund is our legacy of love and respect for all who call Tairāwhiti home.”
Donations are warmly welcomed to help grow the fund and strengthen its impact for future generations. Click here to make a donation of any size.
