A Passion for Animals Inspires Scholarship Fund

The multi-year scholarship will help more young people enter animal care and make a lasting difference to animal well-being.

Born and raised in Gisborne, Paul Benge built his life and career here—spending over 40 years co-owning Business Applications Ltd. Now, he’s giving back to the region he calls home by supporting the next generation through the Paul Benge Scholarship Fund with Sunrise.

Paul’s deep affection for animals—especially his beloved Löwchen dog, Bayley—sparked the idea.

When Bayley required urgent surgery not available in New Zealand, Paul flew her to Melbourne. “The vet team there were incredible. It would be great to have similar services like that in New Zealand,” says Paul.

The experience made Paul realise the urgent need to grow local expertise in specialist animal care and inspired him to establish an endowment fund with Sunrise to support students in Tairāwhiti who want to study veterinary science or animal care. He’s especially keen to help practical, hands-on learners who show real potential but may face financial or other barriers.

Through persistence and hard work, I now feel I have reached my goals and now want to support others with the same attitude,” says Paul.

Paul is growing the scholarship fund through regular donations—gaining tax benefits while also seeing its impact during his lifetime once the fund starts providing grants. He’s also made plans to leave a significant gift to the fund in his will, ensuring its future impact.

“Leaving a gift in my will to grow the fund will ensure the next generation of animal carers get their start, long after I’m gone,” says Paul.

The multi-year scholarship, to be awarded annually in Paul’s name and in honour of Bayley, will help more young people enter animal care careers and make a lasting difference to animal wellbeing.
