A grant from Sunrise’s Arts Fund, established by Dame Bronwen and Dr Peter Holdsworth, is helping Music Education Tairāwhiti deliver its 2025 Community Engagement Programme, bringing high-quality, hands-on music experiences to youth across the region.

Lots of fun being had by students as they improve their skills and confidence through bucket drums.
In partnership with Chamber Music New Zealand, the programme includes violin lessons at Kaiti School, violin teacher training, masterclasses, a holiday programme, and school residencies in Gisborne and rural areas.
The aim is to inspire creativity, build confidence, and provide access to music education not otherwise available.
One highlight is the weekly Kaiti Violin Programme, where ten students in Years 6–8 receive free tuition and instruments. Their skilled tutor, Anna Marie Fenn, recently trained with Sistema Aotearoa to strengthen her teaching practice. Earlier this year, a successful residency at Tolaga Bay Area School brought together 30 senior students in drama, brass, and strings, ending in an entertaining community performance. More residencies are planned at Kaiti and Te Hapara schools.
“Music Education Tairāwhiti is immeasurably grateful for this grant,” says Chair Chris Tilghman. “It allows us to keep delivering quality, inclusive music experiences across our region. These programmes build more than skills—they nurture confidence, creativity, and community.”
