Charles Wilkinson moved to Gisborne as a teenager and became deeply involved in the local music scene, joining several orchestras. His primary instrument was the Rudall Carte flute, though he also played the piccolo and oboe.
It was the interest of Marios Sophocleous, a music teacher at Gisborne Girls’ High School, that prompted Charles to establish the Charles Wilkinson Musical Trust in 1974. He encouraged Charles to join the school as a relief flute teacher, and his contact with young people made him realise that musical education was an extra cost that budding musicians and their families could not always afford.
“It was not unusual for two or three children from the same family to be musically talented and the cost of musical education was a heavy item on their parents. I thought the Trust was a good thing for the future,” said Charles.
With the transference of funds, Sunrise Foundation will continue the trust’s mission, offering financial support to young, talented musicians under 21. The funding will help cover the cost of music education, instruments, travel, and living expenses, ensuring that promising musicians can continue their studies in Gisborne or elsewhere in New Zealand. The trust can also offer support for schools and musical groups.
