Comet instructor Glenn Hamblyn shared, “This programme has not only empowered women, but has also significantly improved women’s health, both physically and mentally.”
Launched in 2023, the Wai Wahine programme was created to address the low participation of women in swimming. Observing many women watching from the sidelines, the instructors developed the programme to encourage more women to get into the water.
“It’s been great to see the group connect and learn together, even though they are from different walks of life and have very different swimming experience - the nature of the group has been such that everyone is supportive and can develop at their level,” says Glenn.
The programme has been a success, with over 40 women aged 20 and older, from various backgrounds and swimming abilities, attending weekly classes at either Elgin or Kiwa pools.
Rosie Recter, a regular attendee, is full of praise and says, “The confidence and skills I’ve developed have been incredible, thanks to the patient and supportive instructors. Wai Wahine offers such a positive experience, whether you’re a complete beginner or, like me, someone who swam years ago.”
