A New Chapter for Comet Swimming Club

An endowment fund for Comet Swimming Club has been created to help secure the club's future for decades to come.
Comet Swimming Club coaches Roxy Adams and Glenn Hamblyn work poolside with the club’s Development Squad, supporting young swimmers to build confidence, skills and a lifelong love of swimming.

For more than 60 years, Comet Swimming Club has been a place where generations of locals have learned water confidence, built lifelong skills, and discovered the joy of swimming. Whether it’s tiny tots learning to float or seasoned competitive swimmers, Comet has always been a place where everyone is encouraged, supported, and kept safe.

The Comet Swimming Club Endowment Fund was established by a generous group of locals to benefit many more swimmers in the future.

This year marks an exciting new milestone for the club, with the establishment of the Comet Swimming Club Endowment Fund with Sunrise, a fund created to help secure the club’s future for decades to come.

The fund was generously seeded by an anonymous local group that believes deeply in the value of swimming and the key role Comet plays across our region.

Their gift is a powerful acknowledgement of the thousands of people who have passed through Comet’s doors over the years, and the many more still to come.

Comet’s reach extends far beyond the city. With instructors regularly travelling up the coast to teach children in remote schools, the club ensures children from Motu to Muriwai, Hicks Bay to Matawai, and everywhere in between have the opportunity to learn vital water safety skills.

The new fund also celebrates Comet’s remarkable legacy.

Founded by Beth Meade, whose commitment, and vision shaped the club into the community cornerstone it is today, Comet has become a multigenerational part of local life. “Beth and others touched so many people over the years,” says Glenn Hamblyn, Comet’s Head Coach.

“This fund is a way for us to continue that legacy and support our long-term sustainability.”

Donations to the fund will be invested and protected forever, with annual income returned to Comet to support programmes, instructors, and the ongoing growth of swimming in Tairāwhiti.
